The Chosen S5E1 to make its online debut on YouTube next week
The episode, which played in theatres two months ago, will start streaming on Prime Video in the US in mid-June, and in other countries in mid-July.
No sooner did I post an update on The Chosen’s theatrical and streaming release dates than the show added a new wrinkle to the news: the first episode of Season 5 will be making its online debut via YouTube on June 8, one week before it starts streaming in the US on Prime Video (and five weeks before it starts streaming on Prime Video in Canada, the UK, Latin America, and a number of other territories).
Unlike the Prime Video releases, which will be available only to Prime Video subscribers in certain countries at certain times, everyone will be able to watch the YouTube release for free via the livestream here (but for how long? previous episodes have typically been snipped from their livestreams after a few days):
The e-mail announcing the livestream said it will include, among other things:
An opportunity to see another episode before it comes out on Prime Video.
The revelation of a brand new shooting location for Season 6.
Information on how to be involved in the Season 6 finale, which will depict the Crucifixion (and is currently set for a March 2027 theatrical release).
The announcement didn’t mention the fact that the livestream will be taking place on Pentecost. (It’s happening on the very same day that the modernized-book-of-Acts series Testament releases its first episode on the Angel Studios platform.)
As noted in my previous post, Season 5 will come out on Prime Video in three installments, matching the season’s three theatrical releases earlier this year. It will start rolling out in the US on June 15, and it will then come to Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Sub-Saharan Africa, the UK, and Latin America on July 13:
Episodes 1-2 — theatrical: March 27 — US: June 15 — Canada, etc.: July 13
Episodes 3-5 — theatrical: April 3 — US: June 22 — Canada, etc.: July 20
Episodes 6-8 — theatrical: April 10 — US: June 29 — Canada, etc.: July 27
I do not know at this point if Season 5 will be coming to Prime Video in any other territories; maybe the livestream will have more news about that.
Either way, Season 5 will eventually be released for free around the world via The Chosen’s own app. In a previous livestream back in April, series creator Dallas Jenkins said this will “probably” happen “sometime in September”.
And, that about covers it for now. More later, perhaps.
