Box office: A Minecraft Movie has one of the best non-sequel, non-remake openings of all time
Also: The Chosen now has two entries in the top ten for the first time ever, and Snow White had another record drop for a live-action Disney-cartoon remake.
A few of this week’s highlights:
The box-office drought is over: after three months of underperformers and other disappointments, A Minecraft Movie had the biggest three-day weekend of any film since last summer’s Deadpool & Wolverine, and it is currently on track to have one of the 25 biggest opening weekends of all time (and one of the four biggest openings for a film that is neither a sequel nor a remake).
The Chosen had two spots in the top ten for the first time ever.
Snow White had yet another record drop for a live-action Disney-cartoon remake.
Thanks to Minecraft, overall domestic revenue for the weekend shot up to $196 million—more than double any of the previous six weekends, and easily the best weekend so far this year. This weekend also nearly matched the equivalent weekend in 2023, when The Super Mario Bros. Movie—another video-game adaptation starring Jack Black—became the top-grossing video-game movie of all time in just a few days.
Super Mario went on to gross over half a billion dollars in North America alone. Time will tell whether A Minecraft Movie has anything like that kind of staying power.
