Box office: Jason Statham rises, Snow White falls
Also: The Chosen: Last Supper part one had the series' best theatrical opening so far, and one of the ten best openings of any biblical or "faith-based" movie ever.
A few of this week’s highlights:
A Working Man, the week’s top film, did almost as well in its first weekend as The Beekeeper, the last Jason Statham action movie that was directed by David Ayer.
Snow White, which already had one of the lowest opening weekends of any live-action Disney-cartoon remake, now has the steepest second-weekend drop of any film in that genre.
The Chosen: Last Supper part one—aka the first two episodes of The Chosen Season 5—had the best opening weekend of any film directed by Dallas Jenkins, and one of the ten best openings of any biblical or “faith-based” movie ever.
The Woman in the Yard had the lowest first weekend in wide release of any film directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (Non-Stop, The Shallows, Black Adam, etc.).
Death of a Unicorn had one of the lowest first weekends in wide release of any film starring Paul Rudd or Jenna Ortega.
Princess Mononoke, an anime film directed by Hayao Miyazaki in 1997, cracked the North American top ten for the first time ever.
Overall domestic revenue for the weekend was about $79 million, which made this the sixth weekend in a row (and the tenth so far this year) in which total revenues fell below $80 million. The last time six weekends in a row fell below $80 million was in January-February 2024, when many films were held back because of the 2023 strikes.
This is also the first March since 2001 (not counting the Covid-affected 2021) in which every single weekend fell below $100 million. (In the entire decade before Covid, there was only one weekend in March—in 2015—that fell below $100 million.)
All eyes now are on next week’s A Minecraft Movie, which is currently tracking to open in the $55-75 million range—which would easily be the 2nd-biggest opening of the year, behind Captain America: Brave New World. Time will tell how it does.
And now, a few more stats and facts re: this week’s top ten, title by title:
