His Only Son gets a new, Sarah-focused trailer going into its second weekend
Also: some box-office updates, and why does Sarah have those markings on her face?
Angel Studios has released a new trailer for His Only Son, the movie about the binding of Isaac that was #3 at the North American box office last week.
I have often described His Only Son as a movie about Abraham and Isaac, but the new trailer focuses on Sarah, who was Abraham’s wife and Isaac’s mother.
You can watch the trailer below. Watching it just now, I was reminded of how much I liked the cinematography in this film—a lot of low-budget “faith-based” Bible movies don’t look anywhere near as good as this—and I was also reminded of how a few people have asked why Abraham, in the flashback scenes, doesn’t have a beard, which is a point I remember thinking about when I first saw the film, but I neglected to say anything about that in my earlier list of bullet-point thoughts about the film.
Anyway, here is the new trailer:
Also, a few quick newsy updates:
Angel Studios issued a press release this morning saying over 17,500 free tickets have already been given to viewers of this film through the studio’s “pay it forward” program, which was announced when the film came out last week.
After opening at #3 for the weekend, His Only Son got bumped to #4 on Monday by The Journey: A Music Special from Andrea Bocelli, and it nearly got bumped again on Tuesday. The Journey is a self-described “musical pilgrimage” that was co-produced by a Christian network and features Christian singers like Michael W. Smith, so it’s kind of, sort of, competing for the same “faith-based” market as His Only Son. The Journey is playing in theatres all through Holy Week, so it’ll be interesting to see if the two films can keep this neck-and-neck thing going until Easter Sunday. (Ironically, The Journey is being distributed by Fathom Events, which handled all of Angel Studios’ theatrical releases before His Only Son.)
No box-office figures are available for His Only Son or The Journey on Wednesday yet, but I assume those films got knocked down to #5 and #6 at least, because The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Ben Affleck’s Air both came out that day.
And, finally, His Only Son director David Helling and two of his lead actors—Nicolas Mouawad (Abraham) and Sara Seyed (Sarah)—did a livestream last Friday to talk about the film and field questions from the viewers. One discussion I found particularly interesting concerned the significance of Sarah’s tattoos (starting at the 28:55 mark):
And that, I think, about covers it for now. More later, perhaps.
