Angel Studios launches new trailer, new theatrical division for His Only Son
The movie, about Abraham and Isaac, is getting a wide release on March 31.
Angel Studios, the company behind the hit life-of-Jesus series The Chosen, announced the creation of a new theatrical division yesterday—and then, today, they released a new trailer for His Only Son, the first film to be released by this division.
The studio, which mostly produces crowd-funded multi-episode shows like Tuttle Twins and The Wingfeather Saga, has had enormous success in theatres lately thanks to The Chosen, which has grossed at least $34 million over the past year and a half by releasing certain episodes in theatres before streaming them.
Those releases, however, were arranged through Fathom, a special-events distributor that initially booked each of those episodes for only a few days, and then added screenings based on demand. His Only Son—in addition to being distributed by Angel Studios directly—will be getting a regular, wide, open-ended release.
To that end, the studio released a new trailer for the film today.
His Only Son tells the story of Abraham and his near-sacrifice of Isaac, and it’s coming out on March 31, the Friday before Palm Sunday on the Western calendar—and the trailer makes a point of hinting at the movie’s Easter links (note the worship song that plays over the trailer, and the title card that calls the movie an “Easter film”):
The trailer was revealed during a livestream hosted by Angel Studios president Jordan Harmon and His Only Son director David Helling, the latter of whom talked about his ambition to do a series of Bible movies spanning the Old and New Testaments:
What other theatrical releases could Angel Studios be planning? Well, this is all just speculation on my part, but at a minimum:
Angel Studios recently started filming The Shift, a sort of sci-fi take on the book of Job starring Neal McDonough, Sean Astin, and a few actors from The Chosen.
Angel Studios is also producing David, an animated movie about the first part of King David’s life that, the last I heard, was aiming for a 2025 release.
And I assume future seasons of The Chosen will get a big-screen push as well.
In the meantime, I will have more to say about His Only Son in the near future.
Stay tuned.
