Get ready to talk about The Chosen's big plot twist
Series creator Dallas Jenkins will discuss it in a livestream tonight. But first: a recap of what's out there already.
As many, perhaps most, fans of The Chosen know by now, there was a major, major plot twist in Season 4: Episodes 1-3, which is currently in theatres.
No, I will not spill any of the details here (not in writing, at least; click the “play” buttons on the videos below at your peril).
But series creator Dallas Jenkins is hosting a livestream to discuss the twist tonight, and I thought it might be good to round up some of the relevant clips and things that are already out there (including, yes, a couple of the interviews I’ve done).
First, on Christmas Day, The Chosen’s YouTube account posted this clip from Episodes 1-3, with the title “See how this scene ends February 1st”:
The clip shows Jesus arguing with the Pharisees, and I analyzed how the clip mixes and matches different elements from the gospels in a post on January 1.
The clip ends with Jesus saying, “Oh I am just getting started,” which would seem to indicate he’s going to do something in a take-charge kind of way—but as we now know, things spiral out of control very quickly after that. (And it’s interesting that the producers chose to highlight the build-up to the out-of-control moment like this.)
Second, I had a chance to speak to a few of the filmmakers on the show’s press junket three weeks ago, after I had seen the completed episode—and at the end of my interview with Jenkins, I asked how long this plot twist had been in the works (since Season 1, was his answer), and whether the Jesus of the series knew it was coming:
I also spoke to a couple of the actors who were key to that scene—and while we never explicitly discussed what did happen, at least one of us did state very clearly what isn’t going to happen any more, and it’s not hard to read between the lines of that:
And now, the episode is out there, on the big screen—and apparently Jenkins appears onscreen after the episode to give people a QR code that leads to a webpage where you can register to watch a clip from Episode 4, with and without commentary from Jenkins, that shows the disciples processing the plot twist in question.
(Apparently it can take several hours after registering to get the e-mail that gives you access to the clip, so I haven’t seen it or listened to the commentary yet. The complete version of Episode 4 will be in theatres next week, beginning February 15.)
And then, as noted above, Jenkins is going to host a livestream to discuss the twist tonight at 6pm PST / 9pm EST. You can watch the livestream here:
And that, I think, about covers it for now. More later, maybe.
