Box office: A divided America wards off the vampires as Civil War beats Abigail
Also: Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire joins the $100 million club, and Spy x Family Code: White has one of the worst openings of any anime wide release ever.
This week at the box office: a duel between preteen vampires! Sort of.
Abigail, starring Alisha Weir as the 12-year-old daughter of Dracula, became the latest in a series of horror films to underperform at the box office this year, falling behind expectations with an estimated $10.2 million for the weekend.
That was enough to land the film in second place behind Civil War, a dystopian drama that held on to the top spot with $11.1 million—a drop of 56.4% from its opening last week. That film’s lead character, a photojournalist, is played by Kirsten Dunst, who first found fame playing a 10-year-old bloodsucker in Interview with the Vampire thirty years ago.
Civil War had the third-lowest gross of any #1 film so far this year, and the weekend as a whole was pretty soft as well. But there were a few noteworthy stats on this week’s chart:
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is now the fourth film of the year to gross over $100 million, behind Dune: Part Two, Kung Fu Panda 4, and Godzilla x Kong.
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare was the latest Guy Ritchie film to skip theatres in Canada, which affected the film’s “domestic” numbers.
Spy x Family Code: White had one of the worst North American openings of any anime film in wide release.
