Box office: Civil War sets new records
Also: DreamWorks Animation has not one but two films in the top ten.
No time for a big intro this week. But here are a few of the weekend’s highlights:
Civil War, set in a dystopian near future in which the American states have once again taken up arms against each other, topped the list and set new records for director Alex Garland and indie distributor A24. It was also Kirsten Dunst’s first theatrical feature in seven years, and it had the biggest opening by far of any film (outside of the Spider-Man trilogy) in which she has had a lead role.
Between Kung Fu Panda 4 and the 20th-anniversary re-release of Shrek 2, there were two DreamWorks animated films in the top ten at the same time.
There were no “faith-based” films in this week’s top ten, but there was an “inspirational family-friendly” film directed by a person whose first two films were at least faith-adjacent (one of them starred Martin Sheen as a priest, the other was co-produced by a “faith-based” production company).
