Video round-up: New clip from the animated David! New trailer for The Carpenter's Son!
In which David sings of adventure to his sheep, while Mary asks Joseph if he doubts his visions.
We cover all kinds of Bible movies here at Thoughts & Spoilers, so in that spirit, I bring you two new videos that appeared today—one from a PG-rated animated musical about David, the other from an R-rated horror movie about Jesus.
First, we have this four-minute clip from David (coming to theatres December 19), in which the title character sings to his sheep after some sort of “scary” incident:
One quick thought:
The typical animated film these days tends to start with an “I want” song, in which we learn what’s missing from the main character’s life (The Little Mermaid’s ‘Part of Your World’ being a classic example). Strikingly, young David in this song says he’s already “exactly where I want to be”—so maybe this film will take a different approach, in which a guy who was already content with his life finds it disrupted by God’s call? Consider: this clip ends with David arriving home to find the prophet Samuel waiting for him. The anointing will surely follow. And in ‘Why God - My God’—which takes place when David is an adult, on the run from King Saul—he sings, “I never asked for this. I wasn’t after this.” Hmmm.
And second, we have a new trailer for The Carpenter’s Son, a horror movie inspired by the apocryphal Infancy Gospel of Thomas (coming to theatres November 14):
Two quick notes:
Mary asks Joseph if he does not believe his own visions. In the biblical accounts, the angels seem to speak to Mary directly (Luke 1:26-38) but to Joseph only in dreams (Matthew 1:20; 2:13, 19), and you could argue that it took more faith for him to believe the messages were genuine (and not just hallucinations or whatever) than it took for her. (I remember this coming up during the junket for 2006’s The Nativity Story, in which Oscar Isaac played Joseph: “He’s required to make an even stronger leap of faith,” said Isaac, “which just adds to his dilemma, man! Poor guy!”) And that’s just when the dreams were fresh. Now imagine clinging to them years after the fact, as memories fade and things get tough, perhaps...
Mary and Joseph appear to share a kiss on the lips. How often has that happened in film? (Off the top of my head, I can think of only two precedents: 1979’s Mary and Joseph: A Story of Faith and 2023’s Journey to Bethlehem.)1
So, that brings us up to date. I’ll have more to say about these films later.
