The Resurrection of the Christ sets release dates – yes, plural! – in 2027
The sequel to The Passion of the Christ is now officially two movies... and they're both coming out mere weeks after The Chosen's Crucifixion movie.
It’s official: The Resurrection of the Christ, the sequel to Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ, is going to be two movies.
What’s more, the two films are going to come out at the beginning and end of the Catholic-Protestant Easter season in 2027—mere weeks after The Chosen releases its own big-screen version of the Crucifixion.
That means audiences could, if they wanted (and if The Chosen stays in theatres long enough), do an informal double- or triple-bill of sorts, going from the death of Jesus to his resurrection and beyond—but presumably Gibson’s films will be very, very different from The Chosen stylistically, and maybe even theologically.
In any case, these are the key release dates (and where they fall on the Catholic-Protestant calendar):
March 12, 2027 (during Lent) — The Chosen: Season 6: Finale
March 26, 2027 (Good Friday) — The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One
May 6, 2027 (Ascension Day) — The Resurrection of the Christ: Part Two
On the Eastern Orthodox calendar, The Chosen: Season 6: Finale will come out two days before Forgiveness Sunday and three days before the beginning of Great Lent, The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One will come out during Great Lent, and Part Two will come out four days after Pascha (i.e. the Orthodox Easter), on Bright Thursday.
A few quick random thoughts:
The Chosen shot its Crucifixion sequence in Matera, Italy, not far from where Gibson shot The Passion, and it’s quite possible that Gibson will shoot The Resurrection in Matera, too. So, it will be interesting to see how similar the new films look or, alternatively, how different their use of that location is.
Did the makers of The Chosen know that Gibson would be claiming Good Friday when they set The Chosen’s release date two weeks before Good Friday…?
I must say: in theory, I like the idea that the resurrection of Jesus could get twice as much screentime as the death of Jesus in Gibson’s cinematic universe. (Assuming the sequels aren’t loaded with flashbacks to the Crucifixion, etc., etc.)
The possibility that The Resurrection might be split into two films was publicly floated by Jim Caviezel in 2023, and again by Gibson last May, but this is the first official confirmation we’ve had that The Passion will be getting back-to-back sequels.
Earlier reports said Gibson would start shooting the film(s) sometime this month, but Screen Daily says production is now expected to begin in October. Stay tuned.
