David: A King's Calling – a pilot for a proposed series
The producers previously made a short film about one of the ten plagues in Exodus.
Of making many David movies, there is no end.
In recent weeks alone, I’ve written about Amazon Prime’s House of David, which was announced just last month, as well as Angel Studios’ animated David, which is currently in production (and is slowly being introduced to the public via Young David, a series of five ultra-short mini-episodes that function as a sort of prologue to the film).
Beyond that, I’ve written quite a bit about the ABC series Of Kings and Prophets, which put a gritty Game of Thrones-style spin on the biblical story eight years ago, and it wasn’t too much further back that I interviewed one of the creators of the NBC series Kings, which moved the story of Saul and David to a sort of alternate version of the present day.
Oh, and King David made yet another appearance in The Chosen a couple weeks ago, following his appearances in season two and season three of that series.
So… ready for another David project?
Twinbolt Media, founded by brothers Kaleb and Kyler Cook, is developing a series of its own called David: A King’s Calling. From their website:
David: A King’s Calling is an epic take on the person of David from the Old Testament. David’s journey towards destroying the philistine champion Goliath is only one part of this very important and multidimensional character. This project centers on the events that create the warrior-worshiper we all know, while also providing a context that sheds light on the personality and character-creation of one of the most renowned figures in all of the Bible. This project will be a culturally accurate spectacle that combines complex, interwoven themes involving family, friendship, self-doubts, love, military, fear, and what it means to honor God when things don’t happen like we expect or hope.
We’ve finished our rough edit for the first 15 minutes of our pilot episode! The intention is to begin production on a pilot episode for an 8 episode series as soon as possible. You can follow David: A King’s Calling as we venture to bring the legendary tale to life by going to Facebook and searching for David: A King’s Calling - Community Group.
The series—or at least the pilot—will apparently star Steve Shermett (who plays Rabbi Josiah on The Chosen) as the prophet Samuel, and it counts Catherine Lidstone (who plays Mary of Bethany on The Chosen) as one of its producers.
The brothers have released a couple of trailers so far; this is the most recent one:
In this video, the brothers talk about how The Chosen itself inspired them to become filmmakers:
And if you want to get a better sense of their style, they have already produced a short film about the plague of the firstborn, called The Tenth, which you can watch here:
I’m not familiar with the Cook brothers outside of these projects, but I’m always game for an adaptation of the Bible, so I’ll be keeping an eye out for this one.
