Box office: The top ten list barely changes, while a few films reach new milestones
Wonka joins the domestic top ten of 2023, Aquaman becomes the top-grossing DCEU movie of the decade, The Book of Clarence drops by more than half, and more.
The word for the week is “doldrums”.
January is never the busiest time at the multiplex, but things were even quieter than usual this past weekend. There were no major new releases, and no big holdovers like last year’s Avatar and Puss in Boots sequels to help keep things afloat.
Instead, a few Oscar hopefuls bided their time, slowly expanding to new theatres while waiting for this year’s nominees to be announced tomorrow morning, and there was one indie sci-fi movie, I.S.S., that flopped right out of the gate.
So, the list of films in this week’s top ten was largely unchanged from last week, and thus, this update will be fairly brief. A few of the highlights:
Wonka, which was already one of the top ten films of 2023 worldwide, joined the top ten of the year in North America, too.
The Beekeeper is well on its way to becoming the top-grossing Jason Statham solo action movie (not counting films with a giant prehistoric shark).
Anyone But You crossed the $100 million mark worldwide, and is now the top-grossing R-rated romantic comedy worldwide since 2016.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom passed Black Adam to become the top-grossing DC Extended Universe film of the decade worldwide.
