Box office: Snow White sets record low for live-action Disney-cartoon remakes
This was also the fifth weekend in a row in which all films combined grossed less than $80 million — the worst such streak in over a year.
A few of this week’s highlights:
Snow White had arguably the worst debut of any live-action remake of a Disney cartoon ever, even before inflation is taken into account.
The Alto Knights—which stars Robert De Niro as two rival mob bosses—flopped with only $3.2 million.
Captain America: Brave New World inched its way to $400 million worldwide.
Overall domestic revenue for the weekend was about $77 million, which made this the fifth weekend in a row (and the ninth so far this year) in which total revenues fell below $80 million. The last time five weekends in a row fell below $80 million was in January-February 2024, when many films were held back because of the 2023 strikes.
What’s more, with no particularly big films slated to open next week, this could very well end up being the first March since 2001 (not counting the Covid-affected 2021) in which every single weekend fell below $100 million. (In the decade before Covid, it was extremely rare for even one weekend in March to fall below $100 million.)
All the industry’s hopes now rest on A Minecraft Movie, which opens two weeks from now. Like 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, it’s based on a video game, it stars Jack Black, and it’s coming out the first weekend in April (though it’s coming out two weeks before Easter, rather than at Easter as the previous film did). Can it replicate at least some of that earlier film’s success? We shall see.
And now, a few more stats and facts re: this week’s top ten, title by title:
