Box office: Nosferatu brings horror to the holidays as Mufasa challenges Sonic for the top spot
Wicked and Moana 2 also surged post-Christmas, making this the first time in two and a half years that five films grossed over $18 million simultaneously.
A few of this week’s highlights:
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Mufasa: The Lion King were in a tight race for the top spot and seem to have split the bragging rights; Sonic narrowly won the three-day weekend, while Mufasa won the five-day stretch since Christmas.
Nosferatu became director Robert Eggers’ top-grossing film in just five days.
Wicked and Moana 2 got a huge boost over the post-Christmas frame.
A Complete Unknown made about as much money in its first five days as Walk the Line did in its first three days almost two decades ago. (Both films are musician biopics, set at least partly in the 1960s, directed by James Mangold.)
Homestead is now the 3rd-highest-grossing Angel Studios movie.
Five films grossed over $18 million this weekend. The last time five films did so well simultaneously was June 24-26, 2022, when the top five films were Elvis, Top Gun: Maverick, Jurassic World Dominion, The Black Phone, and Lightyear.
