Box office: Kraven and the Rohirrim flop hard while musicals and holiday films keep going strong
This week's top ten also included re-releases of the similarly-named Interstellar, with an R, and Interstella, without.
A few of this week’s patterns and highlights:
Moana 2 and Wicked were the top two films for the third week in a row.
Kraven the Hunter, a spin-off of the Spider-Man universe, and The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, an animated prequel to Peter Jackson’s trilogy, had the worst openings by far of any film in their respective franchises.
The holiday films Red One and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever had two of the best holds of the week despite becoming available for home viewing just a few days earlier (Red One via Prime Video, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever via PVOD).
Two older sci-fi films with very similar titles—the 2014 Christopher Nolan blockbuster Interstellar and the 2003 Daft Punk animated film Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem—landed side-by-side in the top ten.
