This week's top ten also included re-releases of the similarly-named Interstellar, with an R, and Interstella, without.

Box office: Kraven and the Rohirrim flop hard while musicals and holiday films keep going strong

Glaring from the throne: Helm Hammerhand in The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, and Kraven (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) in Kraven the Hunter.

A few of this week’s patterns and highlights:

  • Moana 2 and Wicked were the top two films for the third week in a row.

  • Kraven the Hunter, a spin-off of the Spider-Man universe, and The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, an animated prequel to Peter Jackson’s trilogy, had the worst openings by far of any film in their respective franchises.

  • The holiday films Red One and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever had two of the best holds of the week despite becoming available for home viewing just a few days earlier (Red One via Prime Video, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever via PVOD).

  • Two older sci-fi films with very similar titles—the 2014 Christopher Nolan blockbuster Interstellar and the 2003 Daft Punk animated film Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem—landed side-by-side in the top ten.
