Bible movies on Netflix: the first-half-of-2025 viewership stats

The Passion of the Christ appeared on the list for the first time ever, while The Chosen had a surprisingly strong showing considering it became exclusive to Prime Video during this period.

Bible movies on Netflix: the first-half-of-2025 viewership stats

Previous stats: Jan-Jun 2023 | Jul-Dec 2023 | Jan-Jun 2024 | Jul-Dec 2024

Jim Caviezel as Jesus in The Passion of the Christ (2004) and Avi Azulay as Moses in Testament: The Story of Moses (2024).

Behold, another Netflix data dump.

Every six months, Netflix releases a spreadsheet listing all the films and TV shows that have been watched on their platform at least 100,000 times during the period in question. And every time they release one of these spreadsheets, I go through it looking for all the Bible-movie titles I can think of, to see how they ranked, and to see how their viewership numbers have risen and/or fallen over time.

The new list covers the period between January and June of this year, and the top Bible film and TV show this time are strikingly different from one another:

  • The top Bible movie was 2004’s The Passion of the Christ, a decades-old theatrical hit, based on the New Testament, that has never appeared in one of these Netflix data dumps before.

    • Prior to this, the top Bible movies were 2014’s Noah (in January-June 2023), 2017’s The Star (in July-December 2023), 2014’s Exodus: Gods and Kings (in January-June 2024), and 2024’s Mary (in July-December 2024).

  • The top Bible TV show was 2024’s Testament: The Story of Moses, a recent straight-to-Netflix production, based on the Old Testament, that has now been the top biblical series three times in a row.

    • Prior to this, the top Bible series was The Chosen (in both halves of 2023).

Most of the biblical titles from the previous “data dump” are still on the list, though at least one major title, Monty Python’s Life of Brian, has vanished, possibly because it was simply taken off the platform. (I can’t speak for other countries, but here in Canada, Life of Brian is now on Tubi and Prime Video, not Netflix.)

So, once again, I have rounded up all the relevant films and shows I could find and have listed them below, noting how their numbers have evolved over the course of the five “data dumps” released so far. As before, I compiled this list by looking for specific high-profile titles—including every title on the Bible-movie list that I use in my box-office reports—and then by searching for keywords like “gospel”, etc.
